NEW YORK, NY.- Doyle New York’s auction of Modern & Contemporary Art on May 8, 2013 presents a wide range of paintings and sculpture by some of the 20th and 21st centuries' most prominent artists. Works by American, European, Latin American and Asian artists encompass artistic movements from Cubism and Expressionism through the present day.
Featured in the sale is Abstraction #3 by Kim Whanki (1913-1974) (est. $100,000-150,000). Whanki was one of the first generation of South Korean Abstract artists. In 1963, he moved to New York, where this work was executed.
By Colombian artist Fernando Botero (b. 1932) is a 1957 Still Life (est. $80,000-120,000). Best known for his colorful, corpulent figures, Botero’s early work was influenced by the somber palette of European Old Master paintings, as evidenced in this still life.
Robert Rauschenberg (American, 1925-2008) is the great innovator in 20th century art. In his search for various ways to incorporate unconventional imagery and materials into his compositions, he developed a process of transferring printed images onto his support using a solvent. Inroads, 1981, is a strong example of Rauschenberg's employment of this technique. His transferred images overlap and run across paper, pigment and cloth (est. $80,000-120,000).
The auction features works by some of India’s foremost Abstract artists, including an untitled painting from 1958 by Vasudeo S. Gaitonde (Indian, 1924-2001) (est. $80,000-120,000). Gaitonde was one of the founders of the influential Progressive Artist Group. From 1947 until 1956, its members, comprising the most prominent modern artists of India, sought to adopt an international artistic idiom. Fellow member Maqbool Fida Husain (Indian, 1915-2011) is represented by the 1959 Untitled (Seated Figure) (est. $60,000-80,000). This work reflects his interest in Indian imagery deconstructed to near abstraction. Also included in the sale are two works by Indian/American artist Natvar Bhavsar (b. 1934).
Sculpture in the sale offers two bronzes by Henry Moore (British, 1898-1986) -- Draped Reclining Figure, 1956 (est. $70,000-100,000) and Seated Woman (Thin Neck), 1960 (est. $60,000-80,000). Both works are characteristic of Moore’s abstractions of the human figure.
By Diego Giacometti (Swiss, 1902-1985) are two circa 1980 bronze tables, Feuilles, Modele de Salle a Manger aux Grenoilles (est. each $70,000-90,000). The tables were acquired directly from Giacometti by California designer Michael Taylor, who sold them to the Orosco family for use in the Jacuzzi Estate in Lafayette, CA, which Taylor renovated and decorated for them.
