PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA.- The National Museum in Cambodia installed a wire mesh during the night to keep the bats from coming in to the place they had been living in since April 1975. This was the largest colony of bats living in a man-made structure. Museum director Khun Samean stated, ’The museum today is better -- no bad smell. Nowhere else in the world are there bats in a museum. The bad smell, the bad dust, the fleas. It was very difficult. They all helped to destroy visitors’ health.’ The bats deposited guano, nitrogen-rich droppings inside the museum and would later damage the ancient artifacts. Museum supervisor Bertrand Porte stated, ’When the droppings mixed with water and fell down onto the statues it was just awful. Many statues have marks of this and it is impossible to take out.’
