AUGUSTA, GA.- Starters: Selections from the Wells Fargo Collection, an exhibition of nearly fifty photographs, works on paper, and posters drawn from one of the most renowned corporate collections in the United States, opened on Saturday, September 14, 2013, at the
Morris Museum of Art.
The exhibition includes works from a number of well-known artists, including Andy Warhol, Helen Frankenthaler, Alfred Stieglitz, Berenice Abbott, Dorothea Lange, George Caleb Bingham, and Alphonse Mucha, among many others. The exhibition will be on display through November 24, 2013.
The Starters exhibition features work in a variety of media and includes great representative examples from the Wells Fargo collection of vintage and contemporary works on paper, photography, and poster graphics which are drawn from international sources, said Kevin Grogan, director of the Morris Museum of Art. These works offer a broad introduction to many artistic developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Wells Fargo & Company maintains a broad collection of art, which has grown through numerous mergers. Legacy brokerage firm A.G. Edwards (acquired in 2007 by Wachovia Bank, N.A.) began building its Corporate Art Collection in the mid-1960s to serve as a resource for employees: a cultural mirror that would reflect the firms long and diverse history in St. Louis and beyond. As the company grew, so too did the collection and its scope. Motivated by the positive responses of employees and visitors to the readily accessible display of artwork, the firm decided to share its cultural resources with the communities it served. In 1991, the firm created the Art Enrichment Program (AEP), encouraging its branch offices to partner with local art institutions in order to share selections of the corporate collection with their communities. Artwork and sponsorship have been brought to more than 100 institutions since the programs inception. Wells Fargo & Company, which acquired Wachovia Bank, N.A. in 2008, is proud to continue this tradition.
Wells Fargo customers receive FREE admission to the Morris Museum of Art with the presentation of a Wells Fargo debit or credit card during the length of the Startersexhibition from September 14 to November 24, 2013.
