NEW YORK, NY.- Marian Goodman Gallery Golden Square will launch October 2014, giving the Gallery’s world- renowned artists UK representation.

The Gallery will be located in a former factory warehouse at the southwest corner of Golden Square, Soho. Architect David Adjaye will renovate the space, which covers over 11,000 square feet (1,000 plus square meters) across the ground and first floors.

The Director of the Gallery will be Andrew Leslie Heyward.

Marian Goodman Gallery, whose artists include Giovanni Anselmo, John Baldessari, Lothar Baumgarten, Marcel Broodthaers, Maurizio Cattelan, Rineke Dijkstra, William Kentridge, Julie Mehretu, Gabriel Orozco, Giuseppe Penone, Gerhard Richter, Adrián Villar Rojas, Anri Sala, Tino Sehgal, Thomas Struth, Danh Vo, Jeff Wall and Lawrence Weiner has existed since 1977 when it opened in New York with the first US exhibition of Marcel Broodthaers. Since then, the Gallery has consistently espoused a vital and meaningful discourse among artists and institutions internationally, continuing its unique history of introducing European artists to American audiences, and establishing a paradigm for engagement with contemporary art.

Marian Goodman Gallery Golden Square will complement the flagship New York Gallery and Galerie Marian Goodman in Paris, opened in 1995, further advancing their legacy.

Marian Goodman comments: “I have been thinking very seriously about London for a long time and I look forward to creating a major platform for our artists to exhibit in the vibrant and highly sophisticated London art scene. I am delighted to have David Adjaye on board for the redesign of the building and with his recent projects for the Smithsonian and the MEMO project in Cleveland – I believe that he will create something beautiful and inspirational for the artists. Since first seeing it, I was drawn to Golden Square, which feels very special and a part of the history of London. Reputedly laid down by Sir Christopher Wren and featured in the literature of its time, it holds a special place in the heart of London and we wish for the Gallery to continue this tradition.”

Artist William Kentridge comments: “Marian Goodman Gallery Golden Square will be wonderful. There is such generosity in it, to the artists who will show there, to the Londoners who will see the gallery and the work it will present and champion. The space itself is a provocation to work, for new thoughts to emerge. And the city has many pulls: the institutions the Gallery will be in conversation with and the collections of art which were formative for me as a child and student visiting London from Johannesburg. I am very pleased at the prospect of marking a place in the city through the Gallery.”

David Adjaye, of Adjaye Associates comments: “Complementing New York and Paris, the design of a new London home for Marian Goodman Gallery is an exciting opportunity to explore and develop the relationship between art and the Gallery space, within the context of a historic Grade II listed building in London’s Soho. The project is therefore about the dialogue between art and its context as well as between the historic building and contemporary architecture. It offers a narrative about London as an art world capital and provides a platform for the introduction of the Gallery’s artists into this arena. I am thrilled to be collaborating with the Gallery on this new venture.”
