SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Brian Gross Fine Art announces an exhibition of abstract watercolors by San Francisco artist Andrew Belschner. Belschner’s art combines the precision of intent with the fortuitousness of chance. Using watercolor overlays of varying shades and hues, Belschner generates spatial and tonal interactions that develop and evolve on the paper’s surface. Water + Color will be on view through July 3, 2014.

After determining his palette, Belschner disperses his washes with a freedom that allows incidental patterns and colors to organically emerge on the paper. As the layers build, their transparency reveals the different phases of the piece, unveiling its history. Each encounter with the paper’s surface is a unique revelation for the artist, and this interaction of watercolor on paper can either be a surrender or a struggle. As Belschner states, “Water and color are an active combination when united with paper and gravity. I strive for a dance, and at its very best, the resultant work may be both stimulating and revealing.”

In addition to being an artist, Andrew Belschner has had a long career in architecture and interior design. He founded Andrew Belschner Studio in San Francisco in 1997 and earlier in his career, he was Senior Designer with Skidmore Owings & Merrill and Director of Interior Design with Robinson Mills & Williams, San Francisco. He is a recipient of a 2012 International Interior Design Association Leadership Award as well as a number of Solutia DOC Awards and Interiors Magazine Bests. He completed a Master of Architecture at Rice University in 1966, a Bachelor of Architecture in 1964, and a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. Andrew Belschner lives and works in San Francisco. This is his first exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art.
