The Jerwood Drawing Prize is a platform for drawing practitioners to showcase their work alongside other leading contemporary artists in this field, and provides those selected with the opportunity to help define a wider understanding of drawing for future generations.
Selected from original drawings, it has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence, and promoting and celebrating the breadth of contemporary drawing practice within the UK. The longevity of the project is a testament to the appetite of the artists producing work, and the continued interest of audiences visiting the exhibition, making it one of the most popular shows in the Jerwood Visual Arts programme.
A total of 51 works by 46 artists have been carefully selected for exhibition by the 2014 panel; Gavin Delahunty, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Dallas Museum; Dr Janet McKenzie, author and Co-editor of Studio International; and Alison Wilding RA, artist. Their chosen works explore and celebrate the diversity, excellence and range of current drawing practice in the UK.
"The selection was characterised by both instinct and certainty. Indeed the works seemed to choose us, to assert their presence amid the great volume of other works. The drawings chosen stood out by virtue of their capacity to move the viewer emotionally or metaphysically. They also had a discernible candour or resonance that distinguished them from the vast range of works. Drawing is the most direct form of expression yet asserts a very subtle power; it is often an art of absence, a whisper as opposed to a declaration; a suggestion rather than a certitude. The selection process was a remarkable one, for its clear-sighted nature, for the certainty of choice with which the judges concurred." Dr Janet McKenzie
“The brief of over 3,000 drawings to be looked at in less than two days made for an intense but exhilarating experience, and surprisingly there was plenty of time for forensic discussions amongst ourselves. I found my response to some of the drawings to be instinctive and visceral. The show will be intriguing, there are some beautiful drawings and some surprises.” Alison Wilding RA
The prizes, which will be awarded to the winning artists at a ceremony on Tuesday 16 September 2014, are a First Prize of £8,000, Second Prize of £5,000 and two Student Awards of £2,000 each.
The Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK, this year launching its 20th exhibition. It is a joint initiative, led by Drawing Projects UK and supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation through its London based visual arts programme, and now in association with Bath Spa University. The exhibition will be on display at Jerwood Space, London from 17 September – 26 October 2014, followed by a tour to venues across the UK, including Cheltenham, Bideford, Bournemouth, and Leeds.
