SAINT LOUIS, MO.- The Saint Louis Art Museum presents Janaina Tschäpe: The Ocean Within, a 2013 video installation that explores the sensation of being in a dream world.
Tschäpe creates a surreal, dream-like vision of the ocean, evoking feelings of both calm and disorientation in the spectator, said Simon Kelly, curator of modern and contemporary art. This embodies the Art Museums commitment to showcase innovative video work that brings new experiences for our visitors.
Across her wide-ranging practice of painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and video; Tschäpe investigates observed and imagined views of the landscape, filtered through perception and memory. The Ocean Within exemplifies Tschäpes interest in the ocean and her characteristic interpretation of it as mysterious, dreamlike and fantastical.
Born in 1973 in Munich, Tschäpe, was raised in São Paulo, Brazil. She studied fine art at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg and received her Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York in 1998. Solo exhibitions include those held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson (2014); Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2008); Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (2006); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2004); and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2001).
Curated by Tricia Y. Paik, former associate curator of modern and contemporary art, Janaina Tschäpe: The Ocean Within is on view in Gallery 301 from August 1 through October 19, 2014.
