Regarding Seas and Skies Photographic Seascapes



CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.- The Art Institute of Chicago presents “Regarding Seas and Skies: Photographic Seascapes by Gustave LeGray, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and DoDo Jin Ming,” on view through February 15, 2004 at Galleries 2–4. Regarding Seas and Skies features approximately 50 seascape photographs, with Gustave LeGray’s works as the centerpiece. Also included are works by two of the most outstanding contemporary figures in this genre: Japanese  photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, who began taking his black-and-white seascapes in 1989, echoing many of LeGray’s works; and Chinese artist DoDo Jin Ming, who has recently come to create dynamic works in black and white also reminiscent of LeGray. Each photographer illustrates a different attitude that LeGray had toward the subject of the sea. The exhibition was organized by The Art Institute of Chicago. It was curated by David Travis, curator of photography, The Art Institute of Chicago.
