LONDON.- On 17 April 2015 Hattie Stewart: Adversary will open in the South Gallery at
House of Illustration.
This is a new body of work from the self-proclaimed professional doodle-bomber, in which Stewart takes on glossy advertising imagery with her characteristic homage-meets-satire approach.
Hattie Stewart: Adversary is the first in House of Illustrations series of illustrator commissions new work from contemporary illustrators to be shown in House of Illustrations South Gallery.
Stewarts cartoon-like embellishments of aspirational imagery have an infectious sense of fun, but also challenge the authority and values of the mass media. She cheerfully lampoons our fascination with celebrity culture and the manipulation of the public identities of high-profile women.
Olivia Ahmad, House of Illustration curator, said: Hatties unmistakably cheeky approach to imagemaking has made her one of the most in-demand illustrators working in the UK today. Her determined personal vision is key to her striking collaborations with major artists and brands, and we are proud to present her latest independent project Adversary as our first House of Illustration commission.
Hattie Stewart graduated from Kingston University in 2010, and lives and works in East London. She considers herself a professional doodler and works for clients including Adidas, House of Holland, Film 4, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Kylie Minogue. Her work is commissioned for music videos, apparel, editorial and advertising campaigns.
Stewarts independent projects have been exhibited in Miami, Bangkok, L.A., New York and Berlin.
House of Illustration is the key place to see, learn about and enjoy illustration in all its forms; from picture books to political cartoons, advertisements to animation and scientific drawings to fashion design. The new gallery and education space opened in July 2014 in Granary Square at the heart of the Kings Cross regeneration area. It is a major new arts space, with an accessible and exciting creative programme of exhibitions, talks and events.
