Art Museum Offers Two-For-One Day

MILWAUKEE.- The Milwaukee Art Museum is offering two-for-one admission (a $14 savings) to its feature exhibition The Quilts of Gee’s Bend next Monday, November 17 in recognition of being named a "New American Beauty" by PEOPLE magazine. The Museum is open Monday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; general admission is free for Milwaukee County residents on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon. The November 10th issue of PEOPLE magazine named the Milwaukee Art Museum among three "New American Beauties."  The Museum is referred to as "Jetsonesque" and "the city’s instant tourist attraction."  The Milwaukee Art Museum; the Walt Disney Concert Hall, LA; and the McCormick Tribune Campus Center, Chicago are called "a new generation of eye-popping, jaw-dropping architecture."  PEOPLE magazine has a readership of nearly 37 million.

The Quilts of Gee’s Bend is on view at the Museum through January 4, 2004. A recent New York Times review praised the quilts, saying they are "some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced" and are "so eye-poppingly gorgeous that it’s hard to know how to begin to account for them."  Women in the isolated community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama engaged in the traditional art of quilting for generations, motivated by the need to keep their families warm.  The Milwaukee Art Museum is the first museum in the Midwest to host the exhibition.
