LONDON, ENGLAND.- The Institute of Contemporary Art in London will present DE RIJKE / DE ROOIJ: 3 FILMS, on view May 31 to July 7, 2002, curated by Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen. ’They chose their medium as a way of coercing viewers to look closely at images we might otherwise process in a glance’ Los Angeles Times
The ICA London is proud to present the first major UK exhibition of Dutch artists Jeroen de Rijke and Willem de Rooij. They work in 16mm and 35mm film that recalls elaborate pictures reminiscent of those seen in a museum or in a cinema. In the ICA Galleries, de Rijke and de Rooij will show three short films: Of Three Men (1998), 35mm; Bantar Gebang (2000), 35mm; Chun Tian (1994), 16mm.
Bantar Gebang was premiered at the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam in 2000 and shown at the Basel Art Fair in June 2001, where the artists were awarded the prestigious Bâloise Art Prize for young art. De Rijke/De Rooij are represented by Galerie Daniel Bucholz in Köln and have previously shown at the Kunsthalle in Hamburg and Regen Projects in Los Angeles. They will also be showing this year at Villa Arson in Nice.
