Velázquez Work Acquired for 23 Million Euros |

MADRID,SPAIN.- The permanent commission of the Royal Board of Directors of the Museo del Prado approved the acquisition of the portrait titled “The Pope’s Barber” by Velázquez. The work was acquired for 23 million euros in the international market.
This is the second Velázquez work that the museum gets by acquisition in all of its history. The work fills a gap it had on Velázquez, corresponding to his second trip to Italy. The painting was one of the few works in private hands that is unanimously considered a masterpiece by art critics. It is also in an excellent state of conservation.
The work portrays a very important period in the life of the painter, his second trip to Italy (1649-1651), of which the Prado did not have any work. The painting was never in Spain and its acquisition is seen as a recuperation of artistic heritage outside Spain.
This Velázquez work had been exhibited very few times, the last at the Velázquez exhibition at El Prado in 1990.
