MUNICH, GERMANY.-Spanish painter and sculptor Victor Mira died after being run over by a train. This happened after a fire took place in his home. His wife does not believe he committed suicide. But the police have not discarded this possibility after he lost many works in the fire.
Victor Mira died in the outskirts of Munich a few hours after his home/shop was destroyed by a fire in Breitbrunn, near the Ammersee lake. German newspaper “Merkur” wrote the following headline: “Artist Commits Suicide Because He is Desperate”.
The fire took place this past Tuesday at noon. It began in the kitchen. The artist had received the award to the best Spanish artist alive at the ARCO fair in Madrid. The artist was working in his shop in the lower level of his home when the fire took place. He was not harmed in the fire, as well as a woman that was there. Police believe the fire was due to a short-circuit in the kitchen. Firemen took care of the fire very quickly. According to police, the estimated damages of the fire were around 50,000 euros.
Víctor Mira was born in 1949 in Zaragoza, Spain. Andreas Baumgartl, owner of an art gallery in Munich and friend of the artist stated, “Víctor Mira had many German friends and many Germans collected his works. With his death Spain loses one of its great contemporary artists.”
