Ketterer Kunst announces Auction of Old Masters & Art of the 19th Century in Munich
Oswald Achenbach, Der Petersplatz bei Vollmond. Oil on canvas, around 1880, 78 x 100 cm (30.7 x 39.3 in). Estimate: € 40,000-50,000 (US$ 45.000-56.000.

MUNICH.- Ingenious effects are his specialty – particularly when it comes to night-time scenes. On November 20 a superb masterpiece with a moonshine motif by Oswald Achenbach will be called up in the Auction of Old Masters & Art of the 19th Century at Ketterer Kunst in Munich, Germany.

The work “Landschaft mit Pilger“ from 1813 also emanates the poetic spirit of Romanticism in the section of Art of the 19th Century. The catalog of the Karl Friedrich Schinkel exhibition in Berlin in 1981 still mentioned it as an authentic work by the artist. However, meanwhile research has shown that the idyllic work with an air of longing was made by a not less gifted artist. The estimate is at € 24,000-28,000.

The 14 pencil drawings by Moritz von Schwind seem likewise romantic. They served as models for the illustrations in the series of paperbacks “Vergißmeinnicht“, released by Carl Spindler in Stuttgart between 1830 and 1842. They will enter the race with an estimate of € 3,500-4,500.

Two paintings and a study by Alexander Koester also breathe the air of 19th century art. While his works “Acht Enten im Herbstschilf“ and “Enten in der Abendsonne“ have been estimated at € 18,000-24,000 and € 20,000-30,000 respectively, the study “Siesta“ is already available for an estimate of € 4,000-6,000.

The sculpture section is led by Franz von Stuck's bronze cast “Amazone“ from 1897, which will be called up with an estimate of € 12,000-15,000.

More highlights in the range of offerings of this period come from, among others, acclaimed artists such as Carl Dahl, Franz von Defregger, Maurice Denis, Karl Hagemeister, Peder Mørk Mønsted, Friedrich Voltz and Heinrich von Zügel.

The section of Old Masters has its focus on choice hand drawings and original graphic works.

Next to a line drawing and a watercolor by Christoph Heinrich Kniep (estimate: € 3,000-4,000 each), as well as Bernardo Bellotto's, (called Canaletto) etching “Vue interieur des pavillons et des galleries du Zwinger...“ (estimate: € 5,000-7,000) the buyer's wish list will also comprise works by renowned artists like Albrecht Dürer, Jacob Philipp Hackert, Frans van Mieris the Elder, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and, of course Harmensz. Rembrandt van Rijn.
