Sam Maloof (American, 1916-2009), Custom Rocking Chair, 2002. California walnut, ebony inlay, 47 x 26-1/2 x 44-1/2 inches.

DALLAS, TX.- A California Walnut Custom Rocking Chair, handcrafted by Sam Maloof, 2002 took top lot honors when it sold for $37,500 in Heritage Auctions’ autumn 20th & 21st Century Art + Design Auction Oct. 10 in Dallas. The auctions’ emphasis on the American Studio Movement drew the attention of bidders who pursued classic furniture forms by the workshops of George and Miriam Nakashima and other modern design masters

“Classic design will always be in style and we saw bids come in from all over the world,” said Katie Nartonis, Consignment Director for Fine & Decorative Arts.

Custom Rocking Chair, 2002 comes from Maloof’s most recognizable line of furniture creations and bidders also pursued an extraordinary Early Credenza, 1961 &mdash made of walnut, leather and Pacific cloth – which sold for $18,750.

Additional furniture highlights include a Free-Edge Conoid Coffee Table, circa 1975, by George Nakashima, which sold for $35,000 and a “Sanso” Dining Table, for $18,750. A set of well documented Seven Grass-Seated Chairs, circa 1960, sold for $10,000.

Among the auctions’ extensive selection of fine artworks, Ore Lode Vein (Phenomena Katherine Wheel Horoscope), 1971, by Paul Jenkins, brought $18,750, after spending more than 40 years in a private collection.
