LONDON.- LUMAS presents a new series of striking images by photographer and architecture specialist Stephanie Kloss. Born and raised in Germany, Klosss deep interest in mid-century modern buildings led her to California in order to capture some of the worlds most iconic examples.
California Dreaming takes us on a tour of Hollywoods most recognised residences which were designed by star architects of the age including Richard Neutra, John Lautner and Albert Frey. We journey from the famous Goldstein Home which has featured in films Charlies Angels and The Big Lebowski to Sinatras renowned Twin Palms residence where the likes of Marilyn Monroe and JFK are said to have sipped cocktails. Kloss recreates the glamour of the era with her model, Anne, who becomes a living sculpture and, dressed in the style of the time, serves to show off the surrounding architecture.
Alongside the former playgrounds of Hollywood stars the photographs capture important shifts in the history of American architecture. Case Study House #10 in the suburbs of LA was built in 1947 and is a key example of the 1940s push by renowned architects to develop new types of houses in order to accommodate the masses.
Stephanie Klosss fascination with art and architecture is visible throughout her work. After earning a degree in Architecture at the Technical University of Berlin in 1994, she soon began postgraduate studies in Media Art at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. There she studied with Thomas Struth, Candida Höfer, and Marie-Jo Lafontaine. Her work has since appeared in countless solo and group exhibitions, most recently in the renowned Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin.
Kloss recalls the experience: After 21 days in California and over 500 photographs I am taking this experience home with me. I was not in a film, but in a dream that came true.
