Duke of York Launches Queens’ Trail |

LONDON, ENGLAND.- HRH The Duke of York launched The British Museum’s contribution to the celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee will be a Queens’ Trail for families which provides an introduction to some of the many female monarchs represented in its wide-ranging collections.
Among those featured are Queen Idia of Nigeria, Queens Ahmose-Nefertari and Cleopatra of Egypt, empresses from ancient Rome, Byzantium and the Far East; recent queens of Europe and Scandinavia and five centuries of British Queens. Along the trail there is also a section which celebrates royal jubilees from the time of the pharoahs to the present day.
Objects on display in the Trail include paper money from the Commonwealth countries showing HM Queen Elizabeth II, including two showing The Queen in the first year of her reign; modern banknotes showing female rulers from antiquity to the present day; Chinese jade ornaments in the shape of a phoenix, which represented the empress in ancient China: the gold cup of Queen Pu’abi from the Royal Cemetery of Ur in Iraq; the Empress pepper pot from the fabulous Roman hoard found at Hoxne in Suffolk; the Lewis Chessmen, dating from the 11th century, among which were eight queens, and many coins and medals illustrating the long history of the jubilee and female British monarchs from the mid-16th century to the present day.
Following its launch, The British Museum’s Queens’ Trail will run until 1 September.
