NEW YORK, NY.- Joseph Gross Gallery is presenting Eagles Hunters, a curated selection of work from acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Lyle Owerko. This exhibition explores the transformational power of culture, both as a rich historical tradition and as a rebellion against external influence. Eagle Hunters is the artist’s first solo exhibition with Joseph Gross Gallery.

Eagle Hunters is the result of the artist’s two-year journey in Northern Mongolia. Immersed in the cultural heritage of falconry, Owerko’s photography offers an intimate view into the ancient and otherwise closed communities that live with, and rely on, the world’s most dangerous birds of prey. These evocative images depict a singular, surreal beauty against a raw and otherworldly Mongolian landscape.

This exhibition presents a curated selection of photographs reflecting the evolution of Owerko’s practice which documents insular cultures. Select pieces from the artist’s popular Boombox project, highlighting the influential role of the boombox in the hip-hop and punk movements in the 1970’s and 80s, will also be on view at the gallery.

Lyle Owerko is a photographer and filmmaker widely recognized for his photograph Second Plane, which captures the second plane crashing into the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001. It was ranked by the American Society of Magazine Editors as one of the 40 most important magazine covers of the last 40 years. In 2010 he was named a "Hasselblad Master" for his work in fine art photojournalism. His work is included in the permanent archive of the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., and the V&A in London, where part of his Boombox collection resides in the permanent archive of 20th century historically significant objects.

Joseph Gross Gallery represents a stable of contemporary artists who exemplify the gallery’s commitment to pioneering genres and mediums. Located in the Chelsea art district of New York City, the gallery is the second New York space founded by Joseph Gross, a dealer working in both primary and secondary markets since 2005 who also founded ArtNowSF in San Francisco in 2005 and ArtNowNY in Chelsea in 2012. Joseph Gross is known for curating exhibitions that challenge convention and bring the most cutting edge images and ideas by today’s most exciting contemporary artists to the fore.
