Art Collection Donated to American College

BRYN MAWR, PA.- Nearly 60 works of art from prestigious, nationally recognized artists from across the country have been donated to The American College by the MONY Life Insurance Company.

The donation was made in honor of the recent appointment of Larry Barton, PhD as the eighth President and Chief Executive Officer of the financial services educational institution. An art exhibition featuring pieces from the donated collection will be on display at The Gregg Conference Center on the campus of The American College in Bryn Mawr from January 29 to March 28, 2004. A special awards reception open to the public will be held at the Gregg Conference Center on Thursday, January 29th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Prints, monoprints, lithographs, pastels and woodcuts from a host of nationally recognized artists will be on display including works by Robert Rauschenberg, Charles Arnoldi, John Beerman, Gordon Morensen, and Robert Kipness.

“The MONY Life Insurance Company is proud to make this donation to The American College as a means of recognizing the appointment of Dr. Barton as the President of this very unique educational institution,” said Samuel J. Foti, CLU, President and Chief Operating Officer of The MONY Group. “His vision and foresight is enriching the careers of financial service professionals and the public they serve. It only  seems fitting to honor Dr. Barton’s appointment to the College with a gift of art; for artists, like educational leaders, serve to inspire creativity and thoughtful analysis in the lives of everyone they meet.”

Dr. Barton joins The American College with impressive credentials. He has a long and distinguished career spanning both education and industry and enjoys an international reputation as a specialist in risk and crisis management. Prior to joining The American College, Dr. Barton served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Heald College, a not-for-profit institution with 11 campuses in California, Oregon, and Hawaii. Before this, he served as President of DeVry University in Phoenix, Arizona. A former professor of management and business at Pennsylvania State University Graduate Center at Great Valley, Dr. Barton has also served on the faculties of Boston College, Harvard Business School, and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV).

As a consultant, Dr. Barton has helped world-class industry leading organizations, including British Petroleum, The Walt Disney Company, Honda, ExxonMobil, and many others improve their business functions and strengthen their ability to handle unexpected challenges.

He is the author of three textbooks and his articles have appeared in numerous national publications and in more than 40 academic journals worldwide. Dr. Barton has been interviewed on CNBC, NPR Marketplace and other network programs on issues related to financial services, business insurance and crisis prevention.

“The generosity of this gift from MONY is overwhelming,” said Marjorie Fletcher, Curator for The American College. “The addition of this art to the College’s permanent collection provides residents of the local Philadelphia area with a unique opportunity to view quality museum pieces by prominent American artists.”

Art exhibitions at The American College Gregg Center Gallery are sponsored throughout the year as part of an on-going effort to provide service to the surrounding community. The regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sundays 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays by appointment.
