NEW YORK (AFP).- Items owned by the late television host and female comedian Joan Rivers fetched $2.2 million at a New York auction on Wednesday.

The top lot was a jeweled, gold-mounted Faberge photograph frame from late 19th century Russia which fetched $245,000 -- way over its estimated value of $40,000 to $60,000, Christie's said.

Other highlights were a Tiffany silver dog bowl, which sold for $13,750, and a pair of Louis XVI-style cream-painted canapes for $37,500, the auction house said.

An online sale of additional items from her estate concludes at 10:00 am (1400 GMT) Thursday, said Christie's, which curated the sale.

Rivers died in September 2014 at age 81, a week after she stopped breathing during a medical procedure on her vocal cords at a private clinic in New York.

Born Joan Alexandra Molinsky in Brooklyn, she graduated from Barnard College in New York and worked in the fashion industry, before embarking in stand-up under the stage name Joan Rivers.

She was best known for her cutting one-liners, taking aim at celebrities and public figures, and joking about modern America's obsession with image and neuroses.

She was survived by her daughter and grandson. Her first husband, producer Edgar Rosenberg, died in 1987.
