NEWCASTLE, U.K.- Newcastle University will be presenting honorary degrees to people from the worlds of art, broadcasting, business and science. Among those who will be honored by the university is Anthony Gormley, the creator of one of the best-known landmarks in the north-east of England, the Angel of the North. Gormley will become an honorary doctor of letters at a ceremony in May. Others who will be recognized are former Northumberland head teacher and prehistoric rock art expert Stan Beckensall, who will become an honorary doctor of letters, and writer and broadcaster Miriam Stoppard, who will receive the honorary degree of doctor of civil law. The founder and former managing director of software firm Sage, Graham Wylie, will also receive the doctor of civil law degree. The former director of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Centre for Genome Research, Sir John Sulston, who has been a leading figure in the development of DNA analysis, will receive the honorary degree of doctor of science.
