Highlights:
William Kleins Antonia, Mirrors, Paris, 1963.
After a stint in the military, William Klein (American, b. 1928) studied abstract painting at the Sorbonne in Paris under artist Fernand Léger, who often encouraged him to leave the studio and observe life on the street. Soon Klein's paintings caught the eye of a Vogue editor, who offered him an art director job in New York. Klein was deeply inspired by what he saw on the streets of New York, and an editor encouraged him to take photographs, thereby marking the beginning of an enduring and iconic body of photographic work. This photograph depicts Antonia, a model who appeared in several of Klein's photos for Vogue, standing in a corner formed by mirrored walls that create a complex field of reflections and lend viewers an almost infinite number of perspectives on her outfit and pose.
