HONG KONG.- Phillips announced the appointment of Terry Chu to lead the companys Jewellery Department in Hong Kong, one of the worlds most important markets for the acquisition of fine jewellery. The company also announced that Anellie Manolas is joining Phillips as a jewellery specialist in Hong Kong.
Ms. Chu will design and implement a strategy for the Asian expansion and development of Phillips jewellery business, one of the fastest-growing categories in the auction world. The development of the jewellery department is part of Phillips significant expansion of its Hong Kong operations. After the companys first two successful watch sales in Hong Kong, Phillips plans to hold its inaugural sales of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, Design and Jewellery in Hong Kong later this year. In the past year, Phillips hired Jonathan Crockett as Deputy Chairman and Head of 20th Contemporary Art in Asia, along with Sam Hines as International Head of Watches, both based in Hong Kong.
As we gear up for our first art and design auctions in Hong Kong this fall, I am delighted that we are adding jewellery to our well-rounded offering, said Jonathan Crockett, Deputy Chairman and Head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art in Asia. I am confident that Terry and Anellie will create an innovative and contemporary jewellery department that will appeal to Asias ever-expanding world of collectors of art, design and fine jewellery.
Ms. Chu joins Phillips from Sothebys, where she was the Deputy Head of Jewellery in Hong Kong. During her 14 years with Sothebys, she was responsible for client development, valuations and property collecting throughout Asia, working extensively in Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.
Im thrilled that we now have a jewellery department in Hong Kong to complement the phenomenal success weve had with watches, said Sam Hines, Phillips International Head of Watches. Our joint approach of selling watches and jewellery will be to focus on the quality, craftsmanship and timelessness of the pieces, but set in a contemporary context, which I believe will be enormously appealing to sophisticated collectors throughout Asia.
Ms. Manolas joins Phillips from Bonhams, where she was a specialist in charge of the Australian jewellery department. During her time there, the department developed into the leader for international jewelry auctions in Australia. Prior to Bonhams, she worked at Christies for the London and Dubai jewellery sales.
I am delighted that Terry and Anellie joined our company with the goal of building a contemporary and innovative jewellery department in Asia, said Myriam Christinaz, International Business Director of Jewellery and Watches. A major priority for us has been to build relationships with collectors across the region, and a critical component in this ambitious plan was the appointment of an experienced jewellery leader such as Terry to lead our efforts. We feel the time is right for Phillips to expand in the Asian market as we aim to build our reputation as a dynamic auction house in the region.
