Part one of Christie's Latin American Sale sets seven world auction records

NEW YORK, NY.- The top lot of the evening sale was Rufino Tamayo’s (1899-1991) Sandias, from The Lewin Family Collection, which sold for $2,167,500.

Strong results were realized for Cuban artists included in CUBA MODERNA: Masterworks from a Private Collection, with five artist records achieved, led by Mariano Rodriguez’s Pelea de gallos, which sold for $1,087,500.

Notable highlights included Fernando Botero’s A Family, from the Collection of Ruth and Jerome Siegel, which realized $1,267,500; Sergio Camargo’s Untitled, which realized $1,507,000, and Joaquín Torres-García’s Port of New York, which realized $775,000.

SEVEN WORLD AUCTION RECORDS: There were seven world auction records set for artists including Pablo Atchugarry, Mariano Rodriguez, Fidelio Ponce de León, Carlos Enríquez, René Portocarrero, Victor Manuel, and Guillermo Kuitca.

NOTABLE RESULTS:
• Fernando Botero (b. 1932), A Family, Painted in 1997. Price Realized: $1,267,500

• Sergio Camargo (1930-1990), Untitled (Relief No. 325) Executed in Paris in 1970. Price Realized: $1,507,500

• Joaquín Torres-García (1874-1949) Port of New York Painted in 1923. Price Realized: $775,000

• Mariano Rodriguez (1912-1990), Pelea de gallos. Price Realized: $1,087,500 WORLD AUCTION RECORD FOR THE ARTIST

• Fidelio Ponce de León (1895-1949), Joven con pecera. Price Realized: $112,500 WORLD AUCTION RECORD FOR THE ARTIST

• Carlos Enríquez (1900-1957), Héroe criollo. Price Realized: $967,500 WORLD AUCTION RECORD FOR THE ARTIST

• René Portocarrero (1912-1985), Paisaje de La Habana, Painted in 1961. Price Realized: $295,000 WORLD AUCTION RECORD FOR THE ARTIST
