MIAMI, FLA.- Pérez Art Museum Miami debuted Lawrence Weiner: OUT OF SIGHT, a two-dimensional participatory structure designed to lay flat on the floor and scaled to fit the Patricia Papper Project Gallery adjacent to the museum’s main entrance. The project, based on the design and concept of a hopscotch (or marelle in French), reconsiders language through a new dimension, where its presentation emulates the form of an activity that invites viewers to engage with the work through motion and play.

“Lawrence’s creation physicalizes positive thinking,” said PAMM Chief Curator Tobias Ostrander. “This artwork connects visitors through a process of shared discovery and echoes themes of joy and personal focus, celebrating the potential within all of us.”

Guest Curator and Collaborator Larry Warsh shared his enthusiasm for the project. “I am thrilled that PAMM is the first venue to present Lawrence Weiner’s OUT OF SIGHT as part of this global project that will launch at multiple cities worldwide. OUT OF SIGHT inspires audiences from all walks of life to consider visualization, awareness and realizing life goals as part of this unique work of art,” said Warsh.

The 40-foot long artwork culminates in a message of personal empowerment. The ideas presented within the hopscotch encourage visualization and self-discovery—inspiring visitors to consider the importance of recognizing their life goals. The OUT OF SIGHT narrative is meant to stimulate and engage audiences from all walks of life and is presented in a bilingual English-Spanish format.

OUT OF SIGHT combines wit and whimsy in a game-like format, encouraging learning and selfactualization through the use of graphical phrases embedded throughout the work such as: “Spit Into The Wind and Hope For The Best,” “The Destination Is Straight On,” and “Assuming A Position.” By being able to stand, walk, or jump from one position to the next, OUT OF SIGHT taps into the dynamic ‘gamification’ of learning and self-discovery. The viewer navigates the creation as they see fit—interpreting the work while interacting with it. OUT OF SIGHT is a set of guidelines, not a rulebook, and the meaning of this piece is renewed and regenerated with each new step—where it leads is up to each individual.

An installation of OUT OF SIGHT at The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) in Melbourne, Australia will run concurrently with PAMM’s presentation. OUT OF SIGHT will also debut in Chicago, Houston, New York, Pittsburgh, and Shanghai in the coming year. This project will be exhibited in multiple languages, including English, Spanish and Chinese.

Lawrence Weiner was born in 1942 in the South Bronx, New York. After growing up in the city, he spent the late 1950s and early 1960s venturing around the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Weiner’s first exhibition as an artist was in 1960 in a field in Mill Valley, California. Since then, he has maintained:
