NEW YORK, NY.- Sotheby’s will present their Contemporary Curated auction on 2 March. Coinciding with The Armory Show, the sale begins with an exceptional single-owner collection ‘In Its Own Light: Property from the Collection of Ed Cohen & Victoria Shaw’. Amassed over 35 years, the New York couple’s collection reflects both Ed Cohen’s close relationships with many of the artists and gallerists in the sale’s opening session and exhibits extraordinary works of Modern, Post-War and Contemporary Art.
Reflecting a versatile ensemble of works with selections hand-chosen by tastemakers from the worlds of art, fashion and design, Contemporary Curated is the premier destination for collectors of diverse backgrounds and expertise to discover works by visionary artists that have captured the imagination of the market, with estimates ranging from $1,000 to $600,000.
Led by Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild (843-4) (estimate $600/800,000) and Josef Albers’s Red Wall (estimate $600/800,000), the panoptic sale also encompasses outstanding examples such as engrossing sculptures by Alexander Calder and Louise Bourgeois, and vibrant, textured paintings by Pat Steir and Albert York. Other established artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol and Cecily Brown bolster the exceptional sale, which is underscored by the likes of Ugo Rondinone, Mark Grotjahn and Seth Price.
The New York exhibition opened to the public on 24 February, alongside works from Sotheby's Contemporary Art Online auction.

Jill Kargman

A New Yorker since birth, Jill Kargman is the creator, writer, producer and star of the comedy, Odd Mom Out, in which she plays a satirical version of herself. After graduating, she worked at magazines, television and movies, but soon migrated to writing novels so she could be more flexible between work and family. She is a New York Times best-selling author of multiple books, including her newest, Sprinkle Glitter on my Grave.
Will Kopelman
“When an artist knows how to use a brush, you can see it. And that doesn’t necessarily mean formal training – Adele probably didn’t have to go to music school to learn how to sing, nor did Woody Allen take any screenwriting seminars. All great artists have innate talent, but they were also dedicated enough to intensely perfect it with thousands of hours. And from a collecting standpoint, I think we’re seeing people return to appreciating actual skill versus the conceptual.”
Will Kopelman is the founder and chairman of Kopelman Contemporary, LLC, an advisory firm that focuses on secondary-market fine art and deals mainly with estates and institutions acquiring distressed assets. He also serves as an advisor to various brands and several growth venture firms in the areas marketing strategy and brand management. Kopelman is the author of Elements of Style and A Touch of Style. His work has also been published in Elle Decor and Architectural Digest.
