NEW YORK, NY.- The National September 11 Memorial & Museum today announced that more than 10 million people have visited the 9/11 Memorial Museum since it opened in May 2014. It is a major milestone for the Museum, which averages about 9,000 visitors a day.
The accompanying 9/11 Memorial has had more than 33 million visitors since opening in September 2011.
Reaching this monumental milestone demonstrates the 9/11 Memorial Museums commitment to providing an educational and meaningful experience for thousands of people every day, 9/11 Memorial & Museum Board Chairman Michael R. Bloomberg said. New Yorkers, our nation and the entire world recognize the importance of the history of 9/11.
In just over three years, 10 million people from all over the world have visited the 9/11 Memorial Museum to pay their respects, to be inspired, and to learn at the very place history happened, 9/11 Memorial & Museum President Alice M. Greenwald said. Our commitment to preserving and documenting the history of 9/11 and tracking its continuing reverberations in the world today remains firm, as does our dedication to honoring the resilience of our nation and our community. We are especially honored by the attendance and support of our fellow New Yorkers who recognize the importance of this institution to the fabric of this great city.
Local and tristate attendance to the museum has increased 23 percent as compared to the first two quarters of 2015 since the introduction of Our City. Our Story.
The awareness campaign, which began in 2016, acknowledges that it can be difficult for New Yorkers to visit, though by doing so, visitors find a place to grieve, reflect and heal. The campaign is also designed to help preserve their 9/11 stories, along with visitors from around the world, and it encourages them to support the nonprofit operating the 9/11 Memorial and 9/11 Memorial Museum.
The 9/11 Memorial Museum has welcomed visitors from all 50 U.S. states and more than 160 countries. International visitors primarily include those from the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Australia, Denmark, Italy and Brazil.
More than 30,000 students across the country have been reached through the Museums Anniversary in the Schools webinar that began last year. More than 17,000 students from 31 states have registered so far for the 2017 webinar. Also, more than 22,000 students have come to the Museum through other school programs.
The Museum continues to develop meaningful experiences for visitors, including the recently launched Art Cart, a mobile program for children and families on the 9/11 Memorial. Free to the public during the summer, the Art Cart invites young visitors to discover age-appropriate stories and interesting facts through sensory learning, writing, drawing activities, and science, technology, engineering and math or STEM.
