Perth’s St. John Street Renovation Completed

PERTH, SCOTLAND.- A spectacular copper lamppost sculpture was officially unveiled in Perth’s St John Street. The artwork marks the completion of this phase of the project which has seen one of the Fair City’s most historic areas completely transformed. Two local artists, Gillian Forbes and David Wilson, were commissioned to add interest to the area. Gillian created the carved granite threshold pillars with inset bronze plaques at the entrances from South Street and High Street, while David Wilson designed the copper lamp-posts.

Perth previously contributed to the historical area’s renovation with her stone carvings on the Perth flood prevention wall, in collaboration with Colin Begg, designer and Nathalie Fiancette, carver. Mouselow sandstone.

Thirteen "niche" panels refer to features of Perth’s history and association with the River Tay. The new wall which follows the river through the centre of Perth protects the city and in turn the "niches" protect the carved elements.

The cost of the project was £28,500 and the work was carried out in close consultation with local businesses and interest groups, including the Perth Public Arts Trust. The group’s spokesman, John Howat said: “As an organization that is committed to the promotion of public art in Perth, we are delighted with today’s unveiling at St John Street. The new art structures are very much in keeping with the look of the area and will enhance the overall look of Perth city centre.”
