LONDON.- Today Wembley Park unveiled,
The Wembley Park Street Art Project, in partnership with Global Street Art and Mr Doodle covering the legs of the pedestrian walkway (pedway) that connects Wembley Stadium to Olympic Way, or Wembley Way as its known to millions of football fans.
The partnership with Global Street Art, the organisation campaigning to create more opportunities for street artists from over 100 countries, has launched its first Wembley Park installation, with Mr Doodle, marking the start of the 12 month project, which will see different artists transform different areas across Wembley Park.
The first installation, made up of Mr Doodles idiosyncratic characters results in a fun and unique blend of doodle pandemonium. The artwork itself has been created by hand and covers the area at the southern end of Olympic Way transforming the area from a throughway, to a public gallery for street art lovers.
With a reputation for producing spectacular public artworks, Mr Doodle began his career in school, doodling in his sketchbooks and has now worked for organisations such as MTV, Sink Pong London, BoxPark and a range of charities, working on all surfaces from dining chairs and caravans to whole rooms.
The spectacular installation covers 7 (3.5m high) pillars and 12 cinder blocks, making a total of nearly of 43 million sq inches of doodling, and has all been hand drawn.
Speaking about the installation, Mr Doodle, said: Im happy to create this big piece of public art at Wembley Park. The area is undergoing a transformation and Im excited to be part of this change providing public art and bringing the site to life."
I think that it's good when doodles can be used in a constructive way, to bring more fun to blank walls. I really enjoy these kinds of big projects on large surfaces because it gives me a lot of space to play with. I hope that children and adults can both enjoy the work, it has been very fun to create! Come and see it!"
Speaking about the partnership, Global Street Art Co-Founder, Lee Bofkin, said: Part of the impact of street art is that it allows people to see art in unexpected places. So many people pass through Wembley Park, and its great that theyll be able to stop and photograph the work. Hopefully it will add something to their day maybe a different thought or just a smile. Projects like this help us support even more art in other places, like housing estates and building sites around London, helping us get closer to our mission to Live in Painted Cities.
The Wembley Park Mural Project is free to visit and forms the first of a number if installations which will pop up around Wembley Park.
