Museum Wants Long-Lost Victoria Cross Returned

OTTAWA, CANADA.-The Canadian War Museum wants to find out whether a long-lost part of the country’s military history is about to be sold at auction. An Ontario auction house has announced on its website that it has the Victoria Cross awarded to Cpl. Filip Konowal in 1917, and will be selling it in Hamilton on May 30.

The only problem is, the Canadian War Museum reported that same medallost or stolen 31 years ago. If the medal turns out to be authentic, the museum wants it back.

Konowal, who was honored at age 19, was the only Ukrainian-Canadian soldier ever to win the Commonwealth’s highest medal for bravery.

"If it’s authentic, it certainly should not be auctioned off, or sold, "Luciuk says. "It’s a part of the heritage of all Canadians, and particularly of the Ukrainian-Canadian community, and it would be outrageous to think of it disappearing again."

The War Museum has asked the RCMP to investigate, and it wants to send

its own curator to examine the medal.
