NEW YORK, NY.- The Garment District Alliance unveiled the latest in its ongoing series of public art installations, showcasing embroidered portraits of food created by four Japanese artisans in a group exhibition, titled The World of 4 Artisans.
Located in a street-level window at 209 West 38th Street, the free exhibit is accessible to the public through October 28th and corresponds with the exhibit at the Medialia Gallery. The World of 4 Artisans is part of the Garment District Space for Public Art program, which showcases artists in unusual locations throughout the year and has produced more than 200 installations, exhibits and performances.
The World of 4 Artisans is a wonderful installation that embodies both the artistic and culinary community of the Garment District, said Barbara A. Blair, president of the Garment District Alliance. We are excited to showcase this group exhibition through the Garment District Space for Public Art program, and we encourage all New Yorkers and visitors alike to pay a visit.
Through traditional Japanese embroidery and Yuzen a rice-paste dye method that continues to serve as the foundation of dye techniques in Japan the artists created portraits of classic American foods, including hamburgers and pizza.
The exhibition was created by artisans, Takashi Higashida (hand-drawn and painted Yuzen), Hisae Kakehashi (Japanese hand embroidery), Yukihide Sekiya (wet draw Yuzen), and Masanori Sonobe (marble print Yuzen).
