LONDON.- The Royal Academy of Arts presents a wonderful opportunity to view recent oil paintings by Royal Academician, Ken Howard. The subjects in this exhibition reflect the artist’s passions and experiences of his life in London, Venice and Cornwall, three of his favourite places and subjects of the moment.

Painting directly in front of the subject has allowed Howard to capture the effect that light has, whether that is on an urban London scene, on a model or in his studio. Howard works quickly in oils enabling him to capture the ever changing conditions. Howard says of his art: “I love painting Venice. I love painting women in my studio and I love painting Cornwall… In the end you paint what you are… Painting is about revelation, a way of seeing and celebrating the world we live in and helping people to become visually aware.” “It took me years to learn that the only way you can paint light is to paint dark. It was a revelation.”

Ken Howard studied at Hornsey School of Art from 1949 to 1953 before going into National Service with the Royal Marines. On return from service he continued his studies at the Royal College of Art from 1955 to 1958. He was appointed official artist in Northern Ireland by the Imperial War Museum during the 1970’s. He also worked with the British Army across the world including: Cyprus, Germany, Nepal, Norway, Belize and Brunei. Ken Howard was elected as a painter RA in April 1991.
