Anna Cutler Appointed Tate's First Director of Learning

LONDON.- Anna Cutler has been appointed Tate’s first Director of Learning. She will take up the post in January 2010.

The Director of Learning is a new post and is the senior Tate Learning position. Anna will be responsible for establishing and leading a new Tate-wide Learning strategy and for developing the vision and new structure for Learning at Tate Modern and Tate Britain to ensure that Tate’s potential in the field is realised in the 21st century.

Over the last 20 years Anna has worked across education and cultural settings at a local, national and international level. Her purpose has been to explore and improve the impact of cultural interventions on a variety of different learning environments. Her work has ranged from Lecturer (University of North London) to Festival Director (Young at Art, Northern Ireland) and she has worked across disciplines with several national organisations. In 2002 she became the director of Creative Partnerships Kent and was, through this role, heavily involved with international research into learning within the visual arts. Anna joined Tate as Head of Learning at Tate Modern in 2006.

Tate aims to be an inspiration to the more than 7 million people a year who engage with the institution through visits to its four galleries (Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives) and to the 18 million visitors a year to Tate Online. As a cultural leader which has, at its heart, the mission to promote understanding and enjoyment of British art from the sixteenth century to the present day and of international modern and contemporary art, Tate has a responsibility to be at the forefront of thinking on the role of creativity in global cultural, economic and social development.

Nicholas Serota said “We very much look forward to building on the remarkable programmes developed by Tate’s current Learning Teams. Under Anna’s leadership, we aim to bring Learning even closer to the heart of Tate in the future”.
