NEW YORK, NY.- P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and
Creative Time, the New York public art organization, announce Creative Time Open Door at P.S.1, an open call for New Yorkbased artists to propose projects for the public realm, as part of P.S.1s Free Space program. Artists are invited to submit proposals at
http://creativetime.org/programs/opendoor/index.html through January 15, and will be notified if they are scheduled for a review by January 21. After an initial review by the Creative Time curators, 35 artists will be offered 15-20 minute, private portfolio reviews conducted by the curators from both institutions, on January 23 and 24, at P.S.1. The program offers an opportunity for artists to get feedback on specific projects for the public realm.
Artists may send proposals for projects in any stage of development for review at Creative Time Open Door at P.S.1, 22-25 Jackson Ave, Long Island City, NY, 11101. Artists who are selected to participate will present their projects for ten minutes each, followed by a discussion with curators about their ideas and instructive feedback on resources, opportunities, and critical relevance.
Participating curators from Creative Time include Nato Thompson, Chief Curator, and Meredith Johnson, Curator and Director of Consulting; from P.S.1, Klaus Biesenbach, Director, and Neville Wakefield, Senior Curatorial Advisor; and from MoMA, Connie Butler, Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawing. Artists who are not offered a review are able to apply for Creative Times regularly scheduled Open Door program, which occurs every two months. Only New York based artists are eligible to apply.
Creative Time Open Door at P.S.1 is an extension of Creative Times ongoing Open Door program, which began in 2003 as a resource for artists seeking guidance for realizing their public art projects. Through the program, artists benefit from the organizations expertise in public art production by meeting with Creative Time staff members to discuss the obstacles inherent in creating art for the public realm. Open Door is an invaluable resource for artists seeking to take the next steps to independently realize their projects.
Free Space is a new collaborative initiative with artists and nonprofit arts institutions in which P.S.1 provides use of its gallery space for exhibitions, events, rehearsals, and other live presentations. A critical element of the project requires organizations and artists to develop programming to engage the public based on their use of the space. Bringing together the New York arts community during a time of economic challenge, several groups and artists are invited to use P.S.1 as a site for artistic exploration and development. Past participants include Marina Abramovic, Kalup Linzy and Printed Matter.
