CAMBRIDGE, MASS.- Lesley University will host the Boston Printmakers 2017 North American Print Biennial exhibition and a companion student show, Jan. 27 to March 4.
The biennial is a juried show open to artists across North America. This year the biennial received more than 1,900 entries, from which 86 pieces were accepted for exhibition. Juror Judith Brodie, curator of the National Gallery, Washington D.C., reviewed the works to produce an exceptional collection of prints made within the past two years.
The selections cover traditional and innovative media and the prints range in scale and dimension. One print will even grow grass during the five-week exhibition.
Judith Brodie selected works that are bold, broad-minded and intelligent, says Renee Covalucci, president of The Boston Printmakers international association of artists, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The prints on view reveal the issues of today in subtle and overt ways, and will compel a close inspection and reflection to reveal their deep examination of society.
A concurrent Student Print Exhibition, sponsored by The Boston Printmakers, Gamblin Artists Colors and Speedball, will feature the work of students from 12 New England colleges and universities. Artists submitted their work to a jury panel of the Boston Printmakers Executive Board for selection. This year, 10 Lesley University College of Art and Design students were chosen to exhibit their work in the show.
We are delighted to host the North American Print Biennial on the occasion of its 70th year and especially applaud the inclusion of younger student printmakers in the companion show, said Bonnell Robinson, Lesleys director of exhibitions. The Boston Printmakers continue to do outstanding work, bringing a diverse community of Lesley University will host the Boston Printmakers 2017 North American Print Biennial exhibition and a companion student show, Jan. 27 to March 4.
