LOS ANGELES, CA.- Wilding Cran Gallery presents Fissures in the Fold, an exhibition of new paintings by multidisciplinary artist Marty Schnapf.
Schnapf’s approach to painting follows the belief that concepts and methods thought to be incompatible usually do not contradict one another but instead offer opportunities to embrace unlikely combinations that disturb complacent viewing and elude normative interpretation. Each painting follows it’s own dimensional illogic.
The interposition of figures and spaces, mercurial but insistent, suggests a certain frailty of reality. Florescent apparitions haunt the scenes like auras or oil spills seemingly unnoticed by the inhabitants. These tenants of overlapping realities confront viewers with knowing impudence, leaving them to sort, on their own, through the complex psychosexual content portrayed. The paintings unfold with time but never reveal themselves completely.
Marty Schnapf (b. 1977) received his BFA from Wittenberg University and also studied in Cortona, Italy through the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art. He has exhibited work throughout the U.S. and internationally at venues such as Vooruit in Ghent; Kaaistudios in Brussels; 3rd Ward in New York; Ballhaus Ost in Berlin; Caranza 25 in Mexico City; the Portland Institute of Contemporary in Portland; and Museum as Retail Space in Los Angeles. He received a Rema Hort Mann Community Engagement Grant in 2017 and is currently attending a residency at the Soulangh Cultural Park in Taiwan.
Wilding Cran Gallery is also presenting Black Over White, an exhibition of new drawings by Maria Lynch. The drawings are composed of graphite on paper (black over white) and represent the starting point for Lynch’s colorful paintings and immersive installations that she has been developing for many years. Each work begins as a sketch with raw lines and boundless gestures that build upon one another to reveal a new composition. There is a subtle playfulness in Lynch’s drawings that suggests a new territory could be unveiled at any minute. This exhibition is part of the participating gallery program for The Getty's Pacific Standard Time LA/LA.
Maria Lynch (b. 1981) Brazil. She currently lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. She received her MA and Post-Graduate Diploma from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London in 2008. Lynch has exhibited her work internationally, recent solo exhibitions include Fições Senasorias, Blau Projects, Sao Paolo, Brazil (2016); Janela Provisória, O grande Campo-Oi Futuro, Rio de Janiero, Brazil (2015); Ocupação Macia, Storefront For Art and Architecture at Ideas City Festival- New Museum, NY (2015); Aforismas, Rizomas e Selvageria, Anita Schwartz, Rio de Janeiro Brazil Ocasião (2015); Becomings - Bathroom Project, Rooster Gallery, New York (2014); and Incorporáveis (performance), Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2013). Lynch was in the East Side International Los Angeles (ESXLA) Residency Program in December 2015 through January 2016. In 2015 she received a grant for Solo Exhibition at Storefront for Art and Architecture by the Brazilian Embassy. This is her second exhibition with Wilding Cran. Her work is in private and public collections across the globe.
