CLEARWATER, FLA.- Two early works by contemporary artist Dzine (born Carlos Rolón, 1970) are to be offered for sale at
Blackwell Auctions in Clearwater, Fla., in their Americana sale on February 10, 2018. One of the pieces, titled "Cracked Mindz" and dated 1991, is the earliest known example of a mixed media by the artist ever offered at auction. Measuring about 36" square, the canvas and plexiglas painting is double signed and inscribed on the back.
"Admittedly this is not a piece that would normally find itself in an Americana sale," said Edwin Bailey, Blackwell's owner. "But it's distinctly and unquestionably American in every way. And I believe 'Americana' can encompass any aspect of the American experience."
The second Dzine painting, acrylic with a resin clear coat, is dated 1998.
Blackwell's Americana auction also includes paintings (of a more traditional nature) by Benjamin Foster, Paul Strisik, William Jennings, Frederick Haines, Robert Lewis, Edward Loyal Field and others, as well as photographs by Arthur Tress and Richard Schulman.
"We tried to build in something for everyone in this sale," Bailey said, "not just fill the gallery with brown furniture and folk art. We have a Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig signed baseball, a Tiffany platinum brooch, Wernher von Braun's hard hat, and some Colt pistols. We have coins, stamps, silver, Native American jewelry, autographs and historic items. And, I'll admit, we even have a couple of pieces of brown furniture and folk art."
