Paddle8 Announces FLASH! A sale of photographs of musicians, celebrities, and artists
Joe Stevens, David Bowie, Château d'Hérouville, 1973. Archival pigment print, 16 x 20 in (40.64 x 50.8 cm). Open Edition. Signed in ink on recto. Printed later. Estimate $1,600 - $2,000.

NEW YORK, NY.- Paddle8, the leading online auction house, debuts FLASH! an auction featuring iconic photography of musicians, celebrities and artists from the 1960s – 1990s. Highlights of the sale include rare photographs of the Beatles by Mike Mitchell and never-before offered Hollywood photographs by Brad Elterman. The sale features more than sixty images that celebrate legendary personalities including David Bowie, Marilyn Monroe, Robert Mapplethorpe, Grandmaster Flash, Salvador Dali, Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jackson, Patti Smith, Debbie Harry, Mick Jagger, Bob Marley, Sinatra and the Rat Pack among others.

THE BEATLES RARE FIRST US CONCERT PHOTOS BY MIKE MITCHELL
Photographer Mike Mitchell captured the Beatles at their historic first US concert in February 1964, two days after their American debut on the Ed Sullivan show. As a prescient 18 year-old who understood the phenomenal appeal of the Beatles, Mitchell obtained a press pass for the show and took the only close-up photos of the group on stage in one of the most important concerts of their career. In 2011, Mitchell rediscovered and first released 46 photos in exclusive editions of one. For FLASH! Mitchell has curated nine of the best images into new 2018 editions of three each. Two of these photos have previously only been sold as part of the 2011 single editions. Estimates on the nine Mitchell photos range from $2500 to $20,000.

THE L.A. SCENE OF THE 1970s AND 80s BY BRAD ELTERMAN
Brad Elterman began photographing musicians in unguarded backstage moments as a teenager in Los Angeles in the 1970s, consciously avoiding the cliched performance style that had become the preferred standard for music photography by that time. He soon began to document Hollywood stars of the era and the excesses of the 70s scene. His photos exhibit an edginess of subjects, and at the same time project a laconic California cool. For this auction Brad has also created a "greatest hits" of nine new 2018 editions of three each. FLASH! features two never-before offered images, a photograph of Elterman’s muse Joan Jett on Hollywood Boulevard and "The Party Crashers", a study of 1970s celebrity hangers-on. Estimates on each of the nine Elterman photos are from $1600-2000.

Additional Paddle8 exclusive offerings in FLASH! include Tom Kelley's uncropped full-body shot of David Bowie from the 1976 album cover ChangesOneBowie, and images of artists Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat by Christopher Makos.

Other noted celebrity photographers in the sale are Terry O'Neill, Bill Ray (including photos of both Marilyn Monroe and JFK onstage at Madison Square Garden in May 1962, the night she sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President"), Bert Stern, Richard E. Aaron, Gered Mankowitz, Bob Willoughby, and Ron Galella (including "Windblown Jackie", last year named one of the 100 greatest photos of all time by TIME). Additional subjects include James Dean, Sharon Tate, Keith Richards, Brigitte Bardot, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, Kurtis Blow, Johnny Cash, and Jim Morrison. Estimates range from $900 to $15,000 for these photographs.

FLASH! is live online from February 7 through February 16.
