Steve Jobs employment application among items in Pop Culture Auction
Employment questionnaire reveals Jobs's early aspiration to work in the fledgling tech industry– which he would one day revolutionize.

BOSTON, MASS.- A job application filled out and signed by Steve Jobs will be auctioned by Boston-based RR Auction.

Jobs enrolled at Reed College for the fall semester in 1972 but dropped out after just six months to preserve his parents’ meager funds. However, he hung around campus for a year and a half to audit creative courses, including classes on Shakespeare, dance, and calligraphy—these would help to shape his artistic worldview that influenced the innovation of the Macintosh computer.

The one-page questionnaire completed by Jobs in 1972 where he fills out his name, "Steven jobs"; address, "reed college"; phone, "none"; and major, "english lit."

In the middle section, he writes "yes" in response to 'Driver's License?' and "possible, but not probable," in reply to 'Access to transportation?' Concerning his skills, next to 'Computer' and 'Calculator,' he writes, "yes (design, tech)." At the bottom, he describes his 'Special Abilities' as "electronics tech or design engineer. digital.—from Bay near Hewitt-Packard."

In his 2005 Stanford co mmencement speech, Jobs recalled: ‘If I had never dropped in on that single calligraphy course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.’ In 1974, Jobs put his technical skills to work and secured a job as a technician at Atari, heavily relying on the help of Steve Wozniak.

In 1976, Jobs and Wozniak set out on their own and founded Apple, introducing the personal computer to the masses.

"It's a remarkable document that reveals Jobs's early aspiration to work in the fledgling tech industry that he would one day revolutionize," said Bobby Livingston Executive VP at RR Auction. (Estimate: $50,000+)

Also featured a Mac OS X technical manual signed by Jobs in 2001. The signature was obtained in a parking lot after a training session at Apple in Cupertino, CA.

The consignor notes:"It was afternoon, the end of my training day and I just got into my car when I saw Mr. Steve Jobs walking into his car. I rolled down my window and called up his name. He asked me whether he knew me. I told him I certainly knew who he was and immediately asked him if he would be kind enough to sign my Mac OS X Administration technical manual. He refused and said ‘I feel weird doing that.’ I refused to back down. After a bit of cajoling on my part, he finally told me to hand over the manual and pen. He said ‘give me those’ and he autographed my manual."

"Steve Jobs was a notoriously difficult signer—evinced by his reluctance to sign this OS X guide in 2001—and his autograph is incredibly scarce among contemporary figures," said Bobby Livingston. (Estimate: $25,000+)

Also up is a newspaper clipping from, 2008, featuring an image of Jobs speaking at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference for the introduction of the iPhone 3G, with the headline, "New, faster iPhone will sell for $199," signed by Jobs. (Estimate: $15,000+) A Steve Jobs signed magazine cover sold for more than $50,000 at RR Auction, in October 2017.

Additional featured items include:

• Historic Jimi Hendrix arrest fingerprint card. The original fingerprint card from Hendrix's 1969 arrest in Toronto, signed in the upper left by Hendrix, stamp-dated May 3, 1969. (Estimate: $15,000+)

• Rare Doors fully band-signed photograph. Exceedingly rare vintage glossy panoramic photo of The Doors side-by-side, signed by all four members. Fully signed photographs of the band are practically unheard of, and this is a truly spectacular, visually appealing example. (Estimate: $10,000+)

• 1976 Bob Marley and the Wailers signed poster. The color Island Records poster for Bob Marley and the Wailers' 1976 North American Tour, which features a large half-length image of Marley, various tour dates and an image of the cover for the Rastaman Vibration album, and his surname in bold red text along the top.(Estimate: $15,000+)

• Complete set of Harry Potter books signed by Rowling. The complete set of seven hardcover first deluxe edition, first printing books from the iconic Harry Potter series, all published in London by Bloomsbury, individually signed inside by J. K. Rowling. (Estimate: $10,000+)

The Pop Culture auction from RR Auction will begin on March 8 and conclude on March 15.
