FRANKLIN, MASS.- A group of three pastel on brown paper drawings by the renowned French artist Claude Monet (1840-1926), several artworks attributed to Pop Art legend Andy Warhol (Am., 1928-1987), and an oil on canvas abstract composition by the German-American artist Hans Hofmann (1880-1996) will be part of Woodshed Art Auctions’ March 15th online art sale.

All lots can be viewed now, at www.woodshedartauctions.com. People can register and bid on the site, too (a new feature). They can also bid on lots via the popular online bidding platform www.LiveAuctioneers.com. Live bidding will commence at 5:30 pm Eastern time on Thursday, March 15th. Live previews can be arranged, by appointment, at Woodshed’s Franklin gallery.

The Monet drawings are signed along the bottom edge, untitled, unframed and in good condition. Each one measures about 8 ¼ inches by 10 ¾ inches. A label affixed verso on one of the works indicates it was purchased by a man named Edmond from Emile Bernard, a painter with whom Monet was friendly. The set will be sold as one lot, with a pre-sale estimate of $50,000-$80,000.

The Warhol attributions are framed, stylized depictions of popular products and will include a gouache, watercolor and ink on paper, signed lower center, titled Chanel No. 5 (est. $40,000-$50,000); a gouache on paper, signed upper right and verso, titled Absolut Vodka (est. $40,000-$50,000); and a gouache on paper, also signed twice, titled Coca Cola (est. $30,000-$50,000).

The oil on canvas abstract composition by Hans Hofmann is signed and dated (“64”) and measures 25 ½ inches by 21 ¼ inches in the frame. It’s expected to reach $60,000-$80,000. Another untitled abstract composition, by the German-born artist,] Hans Heinrich Ernst Hartung (1904-1989), is an ink and pastel on aged manila paper, done circa 1960 (est. $12,000-$18,000).

The 163-lot auction – officially titled Private Art Collections & Estate Discoveries – features artworks from consignors in Europe, England, South America and the United States. There are original paintings and drawings by (and attributed to) recognized names in 19th and 20th century art, from styles that include Realism, Impressionism, Surrealism, Neo-Expressionism and Pop.

“The March sale brings together a diverse sampling of holdings from estates, as well as fresh works from international art collectors,” said Bruce Wood of Woodshed Art Auctions. “I never expected to have wonderfully seductive Impressionist renderings sharing the catalog’s spotlight with drawings of Spiderman, Wolverine and a happy blue Smurf. It was amazing and fun to see.”

The cartoon illustrations add a whimsical element to the sale and include an ink and watercolor on smooth illustration paper of the character Babar, with a zebra and a monkey, by Jean de Brunhoff (Fr., 1889-1937), signed lower right, unframed; and original ink drawings with pencil indications and white-out corrections of the equally lovable children’s book character Tintin, by Georges Remi Herge (Fr., 1907-1983), unframed. Both lots carry estimates of $25,000-$35,000.

Also up for bid will be an unframed watercolor illustration of the comic strip characters Calvin and Hobbs, attributed to Bill Watterson (Am., b. 1958), artist signed, 12 ¾ inches by 11 ½ inches (est. $15,000-$20,000); and an ink and watercolor on paper of the comic book figure Wolverine, by Herb Trimpe (Am., 1939-2015), artist signed and 12 inches by 19 inches (est. $1,000-$2,000).

An ink on paper with pencil indications attributed to Sol LeWitt (Am., 1928-2007), titled Four Color Drawing (1971), unframed and measuring one foot square, should reach $20,000-$30,000. Also, a graphite and color pencils and ink on white drawing paper by movie maker and artist Tim Burton (Am., b. 1958), depicting Batman and Robin, signed (“T.B.”), should hit $8,000-$12,000.

An oil on canvas composition painting attributed to noted French modern artist Auguste Herbin (1882-1960), signed lower right and on the reverse, dated 1954, 21 ½ inches by 17 ½ inches framed, should fetch $50,000-$80,000. Also, an untitled ink and watercolor on paper by Andre Franquin (Hungarian, 1924-1997), unframed and signed lower right, should hit $12,000-$18,000.

An unframed print on canvas by the enigmatic British graffiti artist known as Banksy (b. 1974), titled Dismaland Souvenir: Original British Pound Bill, has a pre-sale estimate of $1,500-$2,500. The work, depicting Mario (from Super Mario Brothers) being questioned by an official, is a limited-edition print with an assigned serial number. The COA is printed on back of the canvas.

An oil on canvas portrait of Daniel Webster, attributed to Joseph Goodhue Chandler (Am., 1813-1884), 19 inches by 17 inches framed, with a label on the back identifying the sitter as Webster, should make $15,000-25,000; while an oil on canvas painting by Richard Sheehan (Am., 1953-2006), titled Clayton Street Wall (Dorchester, Mass.), signed and dated (“89”), titled along the bottom edge and impressive at 47 ½ inches by 70 images unframed, should hit $10,000-$15,000.
