SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Turner Auctions + Appraisals is pleased to offer modern and historical books from the 16th to 20th centuries on March 31, 2018. Offering over 170 lots from several collections and estates, the online sale features renowned modern books, some signed and/or with photographs; large multiple-volume leather-bound sets; literary collections of famous authors; a “Thesaurus Sacrarum” in Latin printed in 1585, with Old and New Testament Biblical stories; military works, including a map of Washington, D.C. from 1861; groupings of assorted books; and more. Many books are first or early editions; others include engravings, illustrations, photographs, and/or maps.

Turner Auctions + Appraisals begins its online auction on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at 10:30 am PDT; items in the sale are available for preview and bidding now. The online auction will be featured live on four platforms: LiveAuctioneers, Invaluable, eBay and Turner Auctions + Appraisals’ free mobile app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Apps ("Turner Auctions"). All are easily accessed through ‘Upcoming Auctions’ at the company’s website.

The sale presents a diverse selection of modern and antique books, from this century to the 1500s. From 2001 is an important tome on Antartica by Pat and Rosemarie Keough; this +27-pound volume has been honored with numerous awards for its outstanding photography and printing technique. Among the first or early editions by modern authors are those by Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Thomas Wolfe, Jack London, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Sinclair Lewis, A. A. Milne, James Jones, Colleen McCullough, and Truman Capote. Authors from the 19th century include Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Leo Tolstoy, W. B. Yeats, and Lewis Carroll.

Multi-volume sets of celebrated authors from various eras include works by William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, Ivan Turgenieff, Pierre Corneille, Honoré de Balzac, Rudyard Kipling, Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alexandre Dumas, and Voltaire (in French). Reflecting the interests on one collector, there are also a number of books on exploration and voyages.

Lot 22: Winnie the Pooh; A. A. Milne. 1926. First American edition; hardcover. Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Estimate: $300-500. =

Lot 28: For Whom the Bell Tolls; Ernest Hemingway. 1940. First Edition. First printing. First issue dust jacket. Estimate: $700-900.

Lot 143: The Birds of California: A Complete Scientific and Popular Account of the 580 Species and Subspecies of Birds Found in the State; William Leon Dawson. 1923. Four-volume set (complete). Limited edition, one of 350; not numbered. Signed by the author. Hardcover. Illustrated by 30 photogravures, 120 full-page duotone plates and more than 1100 half-tone cuts of birds in life, nests, eggs, and favorite haunts, from photographs. Estimate: $400-600.

Lot 19: 1540-1861 Mapping Trans Mississippi West; Carl I. Wheat. First edition; four volumes. Limited to 1000 copies. Hardcover. Estimate: $900-1,200.

Lot 133: The Dispatches of Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington, During his Various Campaigns in India, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, the Low Countries, and France, From 1799 to 1815. Compiled by Lieut. Colonel Gurwood. 1838. Twelve volumes; all first editions. Estimate: $1,500-1,900.

Lot 108: Seventeen Volume Set by R. P. Francisci Suarez, Granatensis e Societate Jesu, Doctoris Eximii. 1740. In Latin, bound in vellum and paper. Estimate: $2,000-3,000.

Lot 2: ANTARCTICA Explorer Series, Volume 1; Pat and Rosemarie Keough. 2001. Limited 292/950. The 336 pages include 345 images by photographers Pat and Rosemarie Keough. Experts in polar research and art have stated that there is not another published portfolio of Antarctica to equal that of the Keoughs. Among the book’s many awards for art, artistry and craftsmanship, the International Photography Awards committee honored the Keoughs with the award "Nature Photographer of the Year" for their imagery in ANTARCTICA. Estimate: $2,000-2,50
