MACAU.- Photo Macau aims to bring world-class digital art, specialising in photography, moving image and print, to one of Asia’s fastest growing economies along the Pearl River Delta through a carefully curated programme of select galleries, an international symposium and exclusive exhibitions from March 24 – 26, 2018 at the Venetian Hotel in Macau. Led by Executive Director Cecilia Ho, the programme will offer exclusive insight and a preview of the fair in anticipation of the official launch of its first edition. Based in the hub of the Greater Bay region, Photo Macau will introduce the world of photography and new media through works and leading voices in the international and regional photography community to cultivate interest and enthusiasm to visitors and collectors.

“In advance of the first edition, Photo Macau will present an insight into the world of photography and digital art for audiences in Macau, Hong Kong and the wider region,” says Cecilia Ho. “As we continue to work towards cultivating the right gallerists, participants and experts for the first edition, we will showcase an introduction of the fair’s vision that we are continuing to develop from March 24 - 26 at the Venetian in Macau. We look forward to welcoming art, photography and cultural enthusiasts during this time where works by regional and international galleries will be supported by three fascinating exhibitions and an international symposium made up of key influencers in the field.”

The preview programme of PHOTO MACAU will present local, regional and international galleries and institutions including: Anita Beckers (Germany); Cultogethery Gallery (Taiwan); Galerie Volker Diehl (Germany); Galerie Dix9 (France); DNA Macau (Macau); The Reference (Korea) and Osage Gallery (Hong Kong).

In addition, the programme will feature major exhibitions by internationally renowned photographers and new media artists Mike Steiner, Horst P. Horst Photo selling exhibition, video installation by Jeffrey Shaw accompanied by a presentation on Saturday, March 24, as well as a symposium on Sunday March 25 with speakers featuring notable curators, scholars, artists and collectors that will present a comprehensive platform for visitors to learn more about different aspects of photography and moving image.

Mike Steiner’s Video Collection featuring Marina Abramovic and Ulay
Mike Steiner began his career immersed in the Minimalist movement, the Living Theatre and the Happenings occurring throughout Europe in the 1960s whilst experimenting with slide projections, music, film and video recordings. In 1970, he opened the “Hotel Steiner”, a legendary artistic hotel near Kurfürstendamm in Berlin, followed by the Studio-Galerie in 1976, which became an important meeting point for international avant-garde video and performance artists, as well as for the Fluxus artistic movement. He made video works of the many artists and performances that happened in those spaces, from Allan Kaprow and Joseph Beuys to Ben Vautier, Valie Export and Laurie Anderson. Most recently shown at Museum Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, Steiner’s rarely seen video works of Marina Abramovic and Ulay's iconic performances in the 1970s will be the focus of this exhibition at Photo Macau.

Retrospective Selling Exhibition of Horst P. Horst
Considered one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, Photo Macau will present a selling exhibition of works by German-born Horst P. Horst (1906 - 1999), including more than 60 photographic prints that showcase his comprehensive range of styles and subjects from women and fashion, to still lives and portraits. After studying at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg, Horst moved to Paris to work with Le Corbusier and shortly after with the French edition of Vogue magazine where he launched his career photographing public figures of high society and in fashion, notably with Coco Chanel. In the 1940s, Horst became an army photographer in America and began working with President Harry. S. Truman and every First Lady in the post-war period. Throughout his career, Horst travelled extensively photographing the lifestyles of international society including subjects from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Andy Warhol, Yves Saint Laurent, Salvador Dali, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis among others.

Video Installation of ‘Body of Confucius (Installation 4)' by Jeffrey Shaw, Peng Lin, Chang Tsong-Zung, Sarah Kenderdine
This project uses the latest digital technology to re-enact the "Capping Ceremony, Ritual Etiquette, Use of Ceremonial Vessels" from the ancient Chinese Book of Li (Etiquette and Rites) through an interactive application and a three-screen video by Paul Nichola at the City University of Hong Kong School of Creative Media, and initiated, researched and produced by Jia Li Hall at the Tsinghua University Research Center of Chinese Rites. Seeking to restore ancient Confucian Rites for research and educational purposes, Body of Confucius (Installation 4) is both aesthetically compelling as well as historically accurate, offering viewers a unique opportunity to learn about and experience Confucian culture. The work further reflects on the changes affecting modern Chinese society as well as the role of Art as a common language to promote harmony. Currently the Endowed Chair Professor and Director of the CityU Center for Applied Computing and Interactive Media in Hong Kong and Chengdu, this project is led by Jeffrey Shaw, one of the key members in new media art since the 1960s as artist, curator and scholar.

Photo Macau will also host an international presentation and symposium on March 24-25, 2018:
