NEW YORK, NY.- Charles Moffett announced the opening of Charles Moffett Gallery. The gallery will open on May 4 at 265 Canal Street with a solo exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artist Lily Stockman. The gallery will focus on exhibitions of twenty-first century artists, many of whom do not have representation in New York. Charles Moffett Gallery will open primarily as an exhibition space, and will build out a full roster of artists as the gallery’s program develops.

“Opening a space that is dedicated to showing artists of my generation has been a dream of mine since I was a graduate student.” said Charles Moffett. “I’m eager to give a platform to emerging artists whose work I am very passionate about.”

The inaugural exhibition will be Loquats, a solo presentation by Lily Stockman, on view through June 30. “Charlie has championed my work for nearly ten years, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to show this new body of work with his name on the door,” said Stockman. Stockman is best known for her geometric abstractions, often painted in a muted palette of pinks, yellows, blues, and grays. The new body of work continues Stockman’s interest in the landscape painting of American abstraction, from Milton Avery’s New England coastline to Agnes Martin’s southwest to Billy Al Bengston’s Los Angeles, subdued by new color and infused with new figures and shapes. In paintings like Potted Geranium the complimentary, high-key colors open up ecstatic space within the picture plane, while the subtle tonal and temperature shifts between warm and cool greys, as in Quaker Meeting, read like complete thoughts, foggy morning haikus sent as love letters to New York from the canyons of Los Angeles

“I’m very excited to be opening with a solo exhibition of new paintings by Lily Stockman,” said Moffett. “As an artist who is still finding ways to challenge our perception of what contemporary art is and can be, her practice is emblematic of the type of work I aim to present at the gallery. Her understanding of art history and appreciation for the luminaries who came before her has shaped who she is as an artist. She utilizes that knowledge and fuses it with her own experiences to create a style of painting that is distinctly her own."

Charles Moffett Gallery will show work in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, film, and photography, and will focus on artists who are breaking the mold, pushing the boundaries of their medium, and creating stimulating new work.

Before returning to graduate school to pursue a degree in Curatorial Practice at California College of the Arts in 2009, Moffett began his career in the art world working for Zabriskie Gallery. After earning his masters degree, he worked for the New York-based art advisor Kimberly Chang Mathieu. His most recent position was at Sotheby's, where he was the Vice President Co-Head of Day Sales, from which he departed in 2017.
