NEW YORK, NY.- Shin Gallery presenting its first solo exhibition of artist J. PARK (Jong-Kyu Park, b.1966). Over three years he has divided his concept into themes: Encoding (2015), Maze of Onlookers (2016), and his latest, Embodiment (2017). He utilizes these concepts with the array of media, such as paintings, installations, photographs, and videos to showcase his artistic and visionary experiments to the audience.
This exhibition displays a body of his recent paintings and video installations within the framework of omnipresent technology. PARK’s unique incorporation of digital forms using the coded computing system is his signature style. PARK begins his work with an impression taken from the real world which he then digitally deconstructs into pixels and planes. This process allows for him to create multidimensional virtual layers which, while derived from imagery, take on their own abstract representation. In essence, PARK creates a new reality disconnected from the original image.
Selected CCTV installation from the Maze of Onlookers series reveal the structural issues of modern society characterized by the random and imposed mass exposure to technology, and surveillance. J.PARK’s industrial installation holds monitors of various sizes, each projecting anonymous CCTV footage. CCTV was a service aimed to protect the public through monitoring crime. Over time it has transformed into a tool, which arguably violates one’s basic right to privacy. Maze of Onlookers uses pixelated imagery that reflects our passive nature; overlooking how people exploit digital advancement services because of their seemingly distant effects.
J. PARK has refined his voice, and set trajectory to face these uniquely unprecedented issues around both the active and passive consumption of technology. May 4 through June 17, 2018, we invite you to meditate with PARK’s work as we reflect on our willingness to assimilate to the rapidly networked reality.
Born and lives in Daegu, South Korea. He studied painting at Keimyung University and graduated from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris.
