TEL AVIV.- Photographer Daniel Tsal is this year's winner of the Lauren and Mitchell Presser Photography Award for a Young Israeli Artist. This is the fourth time the prize has been awarded; previous winners are Rami Maymon (2015), Mark Yashaev (2016) and Ronit Porat (2017).

The prize carries a $5,000 grant and a solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.

Daniel Tsal (born in Tel Aviv in 1985, lives and works in Tel Aviv and Berlin) is a graduate of the Fine Art Department at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and of the Frankfurt Städelschule Student Exchange Program. He has exhibited alone and in group exhibitions in galleries in Israel and abroad. His works have been featured in local and international publications and magazines.

The jury panel included Doron Rabina, Chief Curator at Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Luca Lo Pinto, curator at Kunsthalle Wien and co-founder of NERO magazine and Brendan Embser, managing editor of Aperture magazine, former director of exhibitions at the Walther Collection, who has served on many major international competition panels.

The judges noted that “Tsal extricates from mundane activities quiet dramas, a call for reprieve and for halting the gaze. He creates a rich psychological range through carefully planned and directed photography. His photography excels in distilling humanity from the prosaic, from the marginal, from that which does not seek to be seen, remembered and become an image.”
