PHILADELPHIA, PA.- The Board of Directors of
The Fabric Workshop and Museum named Maja Paumgarten as its new President at its Annual Meeting in June. Paumgartens term began July 1, 2018, and she succeeds Katherine Sokolnikoff. Jill Bonovitz has been named Vice President, succeeding Ann Loftus. Other officers of the Board include Eugene Mopsik, Treasurer, and Lynn Hitschler, Secretary.
I am honored to assume the role of President of The Fabric Workshop and Museum, says Paumgarten. This is a unique organization, with its mission to share the working process of todays most notable contemporary artists, exhibit their work, and provide much-needed arts opportunities to the community through its apprenticeships and education programs. I am eager to work closely with Executive Director Susan Talbott to move the institution forward.
Maja Paumgarten will make an outstanding President of The Fabric Workshop and Museum, says FWM Executive Director Susan Lubowsky Talbott. She has supported the institution as a Board Member for more than a decade, having served on the Executive and Governance Committees, and co-chaired the Education Advisory Committee. We look forward to her inspirational governance, as we thank outgoing President Katherine Sokolnikoff, whose long-time leadership of FWM has made a profound impact on the institution.
Maja Paumgarten has been a member of the Board of Directors of The Fabric Workshop and Museum since 2002, and is a former employee of FWM. She received a BA in Art History and Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and participated in the Certificate Program in Painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She is an artist and works in both New Jersey and Brooklyn. She has held board and committee appointments at such institutions as The Newark Museum, Newark, NJ; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA; the Tewksbury Education Foundation, Tewksbury, MA; and St. Pauls School, Concord, NH. Paumgarten worked at Christies Auction House in New York and Sothebys Auction House in Philadelphia. In addition she taught at Germantown Friends School and The New School, both in Philadelphia. Paumgarten resides in Oldwick, NJ and Brooklyn, NY.
Jill Bonovitz has served on the Board of The Fabric Workshop and Museum since 1987. She has also been a generous donor through her family foundation, the Robert H. and Janet S. Fleisher Foundation. Bonovitz began her studies at the University of Wisconsin, received a BS from Columbia University, New York, NY; then studied at the Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia, PA, and at Columbia Teachers College, New York, NY. She is a practicing artist who has had recent solo exhibitions at Locks Gallery, Philadelphia, PA; Santa Monica Museum of Art, Santa Monica, CA; Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, DE; John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygen, WI; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA. She has held board and committee appointments at such institutions as Philadelphia Museum of Art; Moore College of Art and Design, Philadelphia; the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, New York; and The Clay Studio, Philadelphia. Bonovitz resides in Philadelphia.
