CLOSTER, NJ.- On Sept. 12, New Jerseys leading estate specialists,
Sterling Associates, will host a 537-lot auction of art, antiques, mid-century furniture, vintage fashion and jewelry, with absentee and live-online bidding through LiveAuctioneers. The event features the estate of businesswoman Joyce Dankoff plus property from other upscale New York and New Jersey estates.
Luxury goods and accessories feature prominently in this auction. There are more than 200 lots of vintage fashion (including many furs) and jewelry, the category that opens the sale. Attractive brooches, necklaces, bracelets, cameos, strands of beads, pendants, rings, cufflinks and even shoe buckles are offered in affinity group lots.
The fine jewelry portion is distinguished by several stellar pieces from the Joyce Dankoff estate collection. A GIA-certified 14K white gold ring is set with a spectacular 11.17 diamond, color H and I 2 clarity. This important ring is estimated at $30,000-$50,000 and will convey with its GIA report.
Also from the Dankoff estate, a superb platinum necklace sparkles with 15 carats (tcw) of diamond baguettes, its 140 gems graded color G, clarity VS1-VS2. The necklace has a total weight of 41 grams. Exceptional in every way, the necklace is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.
Joyce Dankoff was an elegant woman who recognized quality when she saw it, no matter what the category might be, said Sterling Associates owner Stephen DAtri. He noted that Ms Dankoffs everyday wristwatch, an 18K yellow gold Piaget quartz model, was both a prestigious and fashionable choice. Founded in 1874, Piaget is one of Switzerlands most revered luxury watchmakers/jewelers. The wristwatch to be auctioned comes with two extra links and weighs approximately 116 grams. It carries a $2,000-$3,000 estimate.
The Dankoff consignment includes several pieces of desirable mid-century furniture. An early George Nelson for Herman Miller 5-bay CSS Omni wall unit is equipped with nine drawers and six lights. This unit would suit any residential environment, but designs of this type are especially sought after by those who live in urban apartments, said DAtri. It combines shelving, storage and lighting in a very attractive, linear format. You get a lot for your money. Estimate: $4,000-$6,000.
A coffee table version of Ico and Luisa Parisis classic mid-century console table was made in Italy and imported to the USA by M. Singer & Sons of New York and Chicago. As stylish today as it was 50 or 60 years ago, it is entered with a $4,000-$6,000 estimate.
Designed expressly for M. Singer & Sons by Bertha Schaefer, a mid-century modern desk with glass top has a distinctive elevated tray at one end for storage of pens or other office supplies. It is offered with a pre-sale estimate of $2,000-$3,000. Two matching Mies van der Rohe for Knoll Associates Barcelona chairs in tan leather are entered as separate lots, each with a $500-$700 estimate.
Paintings include a signed Reynolds Beal (American, 1866-1951) oil-on-canvas forest landscape, $10,000-$15,000; a Gustave Courbet (French, 1819-1877) oil depicting two figures in a clearing surrounded by vegetation under an a beautifully rendered cloudy sky, $5,000-$7,000; and a large (27¾ x 46½-inch, sight) indistinctly signed American Hudson River school oil-on-canvas of a landscape river scene, $3,000-$5,000.
This is an excellent auction for browsers who like to keep a watchful eye out for unexpected treasures, said DAtri. As we cataloged the Joyce Dankoff consignment, we were constantly surprised. Bidders will want to spend some time looking through the online catalog. There are definitely some nice buying opportunities awaiting them.
Sterling Associates, Inc., is a full-service brick-and-mortar auction house. The companys hybrid auctions are conducted online, just like a live auction, but without a live audience in attendance.
