GARRISON, NY.- Garrison Art Center presents Explorations in Line, a three-person show curated by Tamar Zinn, with works by Jaanika Peerna, Tenesh Webber and Tamar Zinn. The exhibition will be on view in the Riverside Galleries from October 20 through November 11. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, October 20, 5-7pm.

Explorations in Line highlights the vital role of line in the work of three contemporary abstract artists. Working in sculpture, photography, and drawing, Jaanika Peerna, Tenesh Webber, and Tamar Zinn use line as a thing unto itself, an embodiment of thought and sensation, rather than as a means to depict form. Some lines declare themselves soloists, while others dance and sometimes wrestle with one another. These lines transform the space they inhabit and shape how we perceive that space. Each artist’s line is deeply personal, not only in what it conveys, but in the nature of its making. For these artists a line may manifest breath, communicate movement, embody emotion, or reflect natural phenomena.

Tamar Zinn’s drawings are rooted in deeply emotional connections to both classical music and modern dance. Recollections of intertwining lines of music prompt a sensory response, which she transforms into a lyrical duet of gestures. These gestures are captured through layers of pigmented charcoal on paper.

Jaanika Peerna’s sculpture is a direct response to the natural phenomena of light, air, and water. Peerna begins by drawing lines on frosted Mylar. She then systemically slices across the drawn lines, and subsequently shapes them into three-dimensional forms. As the sculpture responds to the forces of gravity, the lines droop, bend and flow. Her lines become the space, rather than merely inhabiting it.

Working within a minimalist sensibility and aligned with improvisational abstraction, Tenesh Webber takes the controlled structure of the grid as a starting point and then allows unplanned operations to direct the outcome. Webber manipulates and layers Japanese beading thread to create a grid, which is then placed onto photographic paper and exposed to light. In the resulting image, called a photogram, white lines are set against a seemingly endless black field.

Explorations in Line invites viewers to contemplate the complex possibilities of line as a vehicle for distinct and expressive visual experiences.

Tamar Zinn has exhibited her work internationally and in the US. Her work is in numerous private and corporate collections. She is represented by Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, NYC, and maintains studios in both New York City and the Hudson Valley.

Jaanika Peerna has exhibited and performed internationally, and her performance work was recently acquired by Glynn Vivian Art Gallery. Peerna was awarded the FID Grand Prize in 2016 for her work in drawing. She is represented by JHB Gallery, NY, ARC Fine Art, CT, and IdeelArt.com in the UK. She lives and works in the Hudson Valley. Tenesh Webber has had solo exhibitions at A.I.R. Gallery, NY, and Victory Hall Drawing Rooms, NJ. Webber is represented in the UK by IdeelArt.com. She maintains a studio in Brooklyn, NY.

This exhibition will be on view in the Riverside Galleries concurrently with a solo exhibit of paintings by Gudrun Mertes-Frady. Both exhibitions will be on view from October 20 through November 11, 2018.
