NEW YORK, NY.- The Garment District Alliance unveiled the latest in its ongoing series of public art exhibits, showcasing two sets of paintings entitled, A Hazy Shade of Winter, created by New York City-based artist Joanne Handler.

Located inside the Kaufman Arcade building on 132 West 36th Street, the free exhibit is accessible to the public through January 4th. A Hazy Shade of Winter is part of the Garment District Space for Public Art program, which showcases artists in unusual locations throughout the year, and has produced more than 200 installations, exhibits and performances.

“Joanne Handler’s exhibit is a beautiful, reflective piece that we are eager to share with the public,” said Barbara A. Blair, president of the Garment District Alliance. “We are committed to supporting talented local artists like Handler and look forward to visitors finding joy in another public art exhibit here in the Garment District.”

A Hazy Shade of Winter consists of two sets of paintings, featuring a mix of Handler’s first paintings with her newer works. Handler’s older pieces were primarily bold, hard-edged geometrics that were meticulously planned out, measured, sketched and taped. When creating her newer works, Handler celebrated imperfections and embraced mistakes, using them as building blocks for additional layers.

This exhibition is both a reflection of the passage of time, and a celebration of the new possibilities that have opened for her personally. While the two sets of paintings exhibited were established using different creative processes, they collectively represent Handler’s ability to remain relevant while rejecting ageism as a barrier for her success.

The Garment District is home to thousands of people working in the creative economy, including fine and performing artists, designers, architects, photographers and more than a hundred theaters, galleries, performance spaces and studios.
