Records & pre-sale estimates shattered at Heritage Auctions Toy Collection of Ronnie Pirovino
A KAWS X Hajime Sorayama No Future Companion (Silver Chrome), 2008 brought $27,500 to exceed its previous record by nearly $10,000.

DALLAS, TX.- Fifty records were set and pre-auction estimates were smashed Nov. 7 when The Toy Collection of Ronnie K. Pirovino brought $603,144 (versus a pre-sale estimate of $144,400-216,050) through Heritage Auctions in the world’s first stand-alone sale of works by the artist.

The event boasted a sell-through rate of 100%, by lots sold and by value.

"Ronnie Pirovino has been collecting KAWS artwork since the beginning, and his museum-quality collection is the gold standard by which others are measured," Heritage Auctions Modern & Contemporary Art Consignment Director Taylor Curry said. "He is very well-liked and respected in the KAWS collecting community, and has been able to acquire rare pieces that never have appeared at public auction, which helps explain the huge demand and record-breaking results in the sale."

The event’s top lot, KAWS Companion Karimoku Version, 2011, set the tone for the auction when it finished at $62,500, more than doubling its previous record and more than quadrupling its high estimate. Pirovino sparked a measure of surprise with his willingness to include the figure, which stands 10-1/2 inches high and is editioned 91 out of 100. It is signed "KAWS…91/100" and numbered in ink on the bottom of the left foot, and stamped "OriginaFake" on the bottom of the right foot.

A KAWS X Hajime Sorayama No Future Companion (Silver Chrome), 2008 brought $27,500 to exceed its previous record by nearly $10,000, while a KAWS X Hajime Sorayama No Future Companion (Black Chrome), 2008 sold for $22,500. The silver chrome figure is editioned 168/500 and stamped "OriginaFake / Hajime Soryama / EDITION 168/500 / MEDICOM TOY 2008 MADE IN CHINA." The black chrome version is editioned 80/500 and stamped "OriginaFake / Hajime Soryama / EDITION 80/500 / MEDICOM TOY 2008 MADE IN CHINA" on the underside.

Interest understandably soared for KAWS Accomplice, set of two, 2002, which was offered at auction for the first time and sparked competitive bidding en route to a final price of $17,500. The set includes one pink figure, editioned 393/1000, and one black, which is editioned 266/500. Each box was signed and dated in silver ink, with an original drawing by KAWS.

KAWS X Lucas Films Darth Vader, 2007 brought more than 10 times its high pre-auction estimate when it closed at $16,250; the previous record was $3,291 in 2016. Other Star Wars-themed figures included KAWS X Lucas Films I, 2013 and KAWS X Lucas Films Stormtrooper, 2008, each of which soared past the previous records for each when they brought $10,625 and $10,000, respectively.

KAWS X Disney Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket, 2010 enjoyed a similar jump over its previous record (of $3,558) when it finished at $13,750.

Another popular group of lots was the six Five Years Later Companion figures, with each edition in a different color. KAWS Five Years Later Companion (Glow in the Dark), 2004 led the group with when it sold for $12,500, while KAWS Five Years Later Companion (Grey), 2004 brought $11,875, more than quadrupling its previous record of $2,625.

Other top lots included, but were not limited to:

· KAWS X Todd James The Twins (Glitter) (two works), 2006: $13,750

· KAWS X BE@RBRICK NexusVII 400%, 2007: $11,875

· KAWSChum (Pink), 2002: $11,250

· KAWSChum (Yellow), 2002: $10,625

· KAWSDissected Companion, 2006: $10,000
